Background: John 17
Jesus prays to the Father
- In Garden of Gethsemane
- During agonizing realization of impending suffering and death
Prayer:
- For His present ministry team (disciples)
- Includes those who will become believers (the future church)
Specific prayer
- That He may be glorified (1 – 5)
- That the Apostles be sanctified (6- 19)
- That the church be unified (20 – 26)
Glorify: To praise, worship God; to extol or exalt, HONOR.
To elevate or light up brilliantly (as a light, lamp, chandelier)
Sanctify: Greek (hagiasmos): holiness or separation
Set apart for sacred purposes
Progressive work of the Holy Spirit to:
a). disconnect from sin
b). conform to Christ likeness
Unify: To be uniform, whole; to bring separate parts together so that they are one;
To become a single unit, brought together to form one entity.
Unity is Christ’s miracle of Oneness.
Our unity is dependent on sharing the priority of seeking and doing the Lord’s will.
His will (desire) is for us to reach those who do not know Him so that they too may become one with us and others who have accepted Him as Lord of their lives.
Spiritual equation: One plus One, plus One, plus one equals = ONE in the Spirit of the Living God
Next session: Habakkuk. Please read entire book chapters 1 – 3
Question: What was/is THE vision?
What are the “takeaways” from the book of Habakkuk?
