The report is in. Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden, has selected Senator, Kamala Harris, as his running mate!
This is a most monumentally historic moment. However, more than a moment, in my opinion, this is a call for change and an opportunity to move our country away from the tide of racism and injustice to the shores of true freedom and equality.
The next three months will be critical. While we will revel in the moments of pride as people of color, we must remember that the fight has only just begun. We must prioritize. We must galvanize. We must organize. The right and the power of the vote will only be realized when everyone who is registered to vote, does so.
I encourage you to remember the lessons of the recent past. An unwillingness to vote because we are not in agreement with all of the purported policies of a candidate is unacceptable. We are living the nightmare of the last three years because of that faulty thinking.
Young people, we need you to vote! You are the game changers! Encourage your peers to take responsibility for your collective futures. VOTE! Choosing not to vote is choosing to remain in abject dysfunction and vulnerability.
If we do our part, we will not be left with the frustration of an electoral college overriding the popular vote. There must be a clear, overwhelming case for the popular vote. It cannot be ignored if we all vote.
Be a part of history. John Lewis, Dr. King, Barack Obama, and countless others have sacrificed, served, and struggled for today’s announcement to become a reality. I must reiterate; the fight has just begun. The opposition will not go away. In fact, the political climate will become tense. Do not be dissuaded or deterred. Keep your eyes on the prize. Set your hearts and minds on achieving the goal.
I believe that if the people of God pray and vote, if the people of these United States truly want change, and vote for a return to decency, decorum, dignity, and national respectability, we will experience the beginning of a new season of hope and justice for all people.
Stand up! Speak up! Vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. It is up to us!
